United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Only 10% of boys aged 14-16 read daily for pleasure, National Literacy Trust findsEnglish
7·11 days agoGrowing up I really wasn’t a fan of sitting and reading a book. To me it would just be words on a page, and often I would have to reread the same sentence multiple times and eventually feel drowsy. I recall being sat in the school library during some mandated reading time, and borderline falling asleep.
It wasn’t until I was much older that I decided to give books another go. They are no longer words on a page to me, I now picture scenes with the characters. I don’t know what changed it but I enjoy reading now, when I get the time. Maybe it was a change from it being almost a mandatory thing, to instead being my choice?

2·12 days agoStS came out in early access and was a solid game with quite a lot of placeholders. I suspect StS2 will be a much more polished experience compared to that, and Megacrit has the track record of the first title to give confidence.

3·15 days agoI don’t know if it’s still good, but when I had my headset I loved Synth Riders. At times I felt like I was really dancing. Some of the “experiences” were great too, there was a Muse one that was really well done!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What advice or tips do you have which sound like nonsense but really work?
1·20 days agoMay have to try this next time! Normally I gulp lots of air until I can’t anymore, then hold my breath until I can’t, and breath out really slowly. It works but can be uncomfortable to do at times.
There was a contestant on the UK Apprentice show that did just that, and was apparently seeing success.

1·23 days agoI think No Mans Sky came out in 2016 and is still receiving free updates. I bought it dirt cheap and have got so many hours out of the free updates I’m beginning to feel a little level of guilt. I guess I’ll pick up Light No Fire when it releases.

9·1 month agoMonster Train 2 if you like card games. It’s got a load of content and replay and they recently released a patch today to add more!
The guy kind of looks like Johnny Flynn, who is in the TV series Lovesick (aka Scrotal Recall) but I can’t seem to pin down what this particular picture is from. Doesn’t look like he’s been in any 50 shades movies.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•[Discussion] What are you playing on your Deck? - Feb 2026
3·1 month ago- Monster Train 2

Also been playing Expedition 33 and picked up Shredders yesterday, but have been streaming them from my PC as they look awful when trying to play natively.
New patch and DLC for Monster Train tomorrow that I’m excited for. Slay the Spire 2 will have some solid competition for my time when it releases!

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Steam Deck has hit a milestone with over 25,000 games rated Playable or Verified by Valve (7,518 Verified, 17,492 Playable), up from 20,000 in June 2025
10·1 month agoThis is great news!
I do feel like for some of these games being labeled as playable, by a lot of people’s standards I don’t think they would say they’re enjoyable to play in the state they are presented.
For example Expedition 33 is labeled as Steam Deck verified, but the quality is very poor, that I’m not sure I would be able to stand playing for long. Instead I’ve had to set up to stream from my PC.
Still great news though, and I hope the steam deck is considered more in the future when games are being made.

1·1 month agoThanks, been looking into this and it seems there is Descenders and Descenders Next. The former is really well received but it seems Next is still quite a work in progress. The impression I get from the store page is Descenders only has mountain biking? Still looks great though.

4·1 month agoI hate that Ubisoft have Steep and Riders Republic. Hands down my favourite snowboarding/skiing games that aren’t SSX.
I don’t suppose there are any better alternatives? I much prefer the arcade style over realism. It’s nice to be able to finish work and just freeride to unwind.

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft CEO warns that we must 'do something useful' with AI or they'll lose 'social permission' to burn electricity on itEnglish
1·1 month agoit is useful as a sort of better google, like for things that are documented but reading the documentation makes your head hurt so you can ask it to dumb it down to get the core concept and go from there
I agree with this point so much. I’m probably a real thicko, and being able to use it to explain concepts in a different way or provide analogies has been so helpful for my learning.
I hate the impact from use of AI, and I hope that we will see greater efficiencies in the near future so there is less resource consumption.

I just want a pillow that doesn’t put pressure on my ear, but also isn’t stupidly soft to the point it doesn’t support my neck. The Simba hybrid pillow was good for the first few months, but now just scrunches up against the headboard when I’m sleeping and I wake up with my neck at what feels like a 45° angle…

World News@lemmy.world•White House demands British supermarkets stock chlorinated chickenEnglish
27·2 months agoI’m not advocating for American chlorinated chicken, but I’m not sure our chicken is to a much higher standard. Over the last few years I’ve noticed a decline in the quality of our chicken from white striping to woody breast. I guess this is caused by them using breeds that grow quickly.
