There is Kali with GNOME?? XFCE is simply really bad, but it works well with their menu and custom widgets.

I dont think GNOME makes any sense tbh, KDE would make sense, heavily debloated.

Kali is a tool, not a daily driver. It has actively reduced security and open holes everywhere, so that you can hack things easier

GNOME is a noob desktop (or used by people that do everything in the terminal), so I dont see any connection here

If you use the dolphin file manager, that might create a .directory file in every visited folder. But that is just annoying and contains some metadata, nothing bad

Text mode isnt just the kernel… the first thing that starts after the kernel is the init system.

Boot means initramfs plus kernel. Any other part could do that, doesnt need to run in kernelspace. I dont think the initramfs runs in kernel mode either.

Linux is a big huge thing that is all very highly privileged. It works, very well, but it is kind of a security mess.
