Guess it is too hard to pick a single scene from “Grave of the Fireflies”? That movie is basically an emotional gut punch from start to finish.

Technology@lemmy.world•This new 40TB hard drive from Seagate is just the beginning—50TB is coming fast!English
1·10 months agoI mean comparatively to HDDs.
Of course there are also challenges to making a high capacity SSD, but i don’t think they are using fundamentally new methods to achieve higher capacities. Yes they need to design better controllers and heat management becomes a larger factor, but the nand chips to my knowledge are still the same you’d see in smaller capacities. And the form factor has the space to accomodate them.
If HDDs could just continue to stack more of the same platters into a drive to increase capacity they’d have a much easier time to scale.

4·10 months agoHow about a 122.88tb SSD? Large SSDs are pretty common in the enterprise market and arguably much easier to manufacture since you only need to put a bunch of nand chips on a pcb.

16·11 months agoHow would the EU scale such operations specifically? My understanding is that the hardware used here is comparatively minimal and Ukraine uses (and produces) multiple times the amount of drones used here weekly. And i don’t think those were super high tech drones either. So that surely isn’t the limiting factor here.
This really comes down to planning and boots on the ground to execute the plan. I am relatively sure that the west is sharing satellite images and other intelligence regarding targets with Ukraine. But you can’t really expect the EU to help with manpower in Russia.

25·11 months agoDo you even have to pay hosting costs, if you put a game on steam or does valve not distribute your game for free?
If I’d have to guess the bigger issues with a game like this would be licensing or that delisting allows some form of tax advantageous asset depreciation.

World News@lemmy.world•Belgium’s future queen caught up in Harvard foreign student banEnglish
3·11 months agoI’d imagine that “school” in that context is used more broadly and encompases stuff like kindergarten.
A look at their website shows that they seem to also have a preschool and elementary school. It even currently says that you can enroll your kids born 2023 now “even if they don’t start in 2026”, which implies that starting 3 seems to indeed be a reasonable time to join their preschool program.

World News@lemmy.world•Belgium’s future queen caught up in Harvard foreign student banEnglish
36·11 months agoConsidering her future job as queen will involve a lot of diplomatic and ceremonial functions it does kind of make sense to me that you’d want her to gain some international experience.
Also on a personal level i’d imagine it is much easier to have some resemblance of a private life in a foreign country, especially at a prestigious institution where plenty of others share notable backgrounds, compared to going to a local university where everyone knows who you are. In a small country like Belgium you probably don’t even have much choices as to which university even offers a good program in your chosen field.
Edit:
Elisabeth initially studied at St John Berchmans College in Marollen, Brussels from September 2004 until August 2018. This marked a significant change in Belgian royal tradition, being the first time that a future Belgian monarch’s education has begun in Dutch
In May 2020, the Belgian Royal Court announced that Elisabeth would undertake military training. On 31 August 2020, Elisabeth entered the Royal Military Academy in Brussels, studying social and military sciences
Really seems like the worst candidate to make this accuse against

3·11 months agoTo me this news seems more targeted towards european audiences, which couldn’t vote for Trump anyways. Normally you’d expect someone like her to be the last one affected by something like this, if at all. So this drives home the point that it can literally happen to anyone, not just certain groups.

7·11 months agoThat depends on whether you believe that a ban leads to an overall reduction of such problematic imbalances, rather than just shifting shifting the whole industry into illegal markets that are unregulated and hidden, where they might actually get amplified. By banning it you are also giving up your opportunity to regulate.
Prostitution presents a similar dilemma, which countries handle in various ways. Some ban it completely, others like sweden have the “nordic/swedish” model where only the buyer gets penalized, and in some contries like Germany it is legal (either with or without additional regulations in place). Based on a brief search i think it’s still up for debate whether the nordic model has the desired effects, with the opaqure nature of illegal markets making it hard to properly study the subject.
Another aspect of why it often is better is that it allows them to avoid paying taxes on sales and already accumulated profits, which is desirable because of the compound interest effect.
I think if using something as collateral for a loan would create a taxable event and eliminate this advantage, then they would care a lot less about the arbitrage play between interest rates and average long term stock returns.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your method of enjoying (or at least tolerating) physical exercise?
6·11 months agoIn a similar fashion I enjoy listening to podcasts while running. I find music to in a way get filtered out by my brain after a while whereas podcasts keep me engaged. Inversely I can’t really focus on podcasts in the gym where I am switching up exercises.
Over time I’ve also optimized my listening experience by getting a pair of bone conducting headphones and a watch that can store and playback podcasts, so I don’t have to carry around my phone on runs.

9·11 months agoAnd ideally also something that doesn’t require too much preparation. If it takes a long time to prepare for or get back after you are usually less likely to do it.
From what little I’ve read more like Francis, which isn’t surprising considering he appointed the majority of those who just voted.
Apparently he’s a bit more moderate. Similar focus on the poor and immigrants, which apparently Leo 13 was as well (name choice is also a statement, so reading up on whoever has the name before might be worthwhile). But slightly more conservative in regard to lgbtq and women.

4·11 months agoThere’s currently a Kickstarter going on for a watch that aims to be modular and repairable. It’s called UNA Watch.
Look interesting, but imo with these things it’s a bit of a chicken and egg problem, where the upgradeability/repairability only has value, if it is actually provided in the future (and economically viable). Something that can only be proven in time, but requires people to trust it before.
I’m not in the market for a new watch right now, since I just repaired the screen on my Garmin, but am keeping an eye on it, since sadly Garmin seems to have entered the early stages of enshittification.
Agreed. The prequels have flawed execution, but imo a good base. It’s the reverse with the sequels that are mostly style over substance, chasing some pretty shots regardless whether it makes for a good movie. And I take the former over the latter any day. Especially if we remember that Lucas asked other directors to make them.
I’d say the most recent major influences were the IPO and the emergence of LLMs.
Reddit becoming a publicly traded company and the preparation to do so certainly initiated a major shift in its priorities.
Ai and large language models make it easier than ever to create shiny, but low quality content.
And the rest is just reddit becoming more mainstream leading to an overall shift towards banal rather than niche topics.

2·1 year agoDid it really take $6.7 million to develop, or was most of that money just a really nice payday for the guy behind the crowd funding campaign? To his credit he did at least end up with a product, however bad it might be, but without transparent finances I’ll just assume that he paid himself a handsome salary.

Imo this year had a pretty good lineup for TV shows. So far we’ve had severance s2, Andor s2, the pitt, adolescence and the rehersal. All outstanding television imo. Murderbot is decent, but the 20-25min episodes per week are just way to short.
