News@lemmy.world•Here's what Canadian provinces are doing with all the US liquor they pulled off shelves
16·4 days agoIn Canada, alcohol sales are largely controlled by provincial governments, which operate boards that manage the import and sale of most wine and spirits, giving them broad authority over what is sold. Only Alberta and Saskatchewan have a fully-privatised liquor retail system.
Privatized businesses are more concerned with profits than the public interest? Shocking.

Games@sh.itjust.works•Japanese devs face font licensing dilemma as leading provider increases annual plan price from $380 to $20,000+
8·10 days agoThe crisis could even eventually force some Japanese studios to rebrand entirely if their corporate identity is tied to a commercial font they can no longer afford to license.
Regarding this particular problem, I’m on the side of the gaming industry on every issue except this one. It’s sheer insanity not to own everything involved with your company’s identity, ffs. That’s just a monumentally bad decision with obvious, foreseeable risks. I will shed no tears if a big studio has to go through an expensive rebrand because of their own incompetent decision making.
That being said, I don’t know anything about Japanese font licensing besides what’s presented in this article. If anyone has important nuance to add, please do!

I like that it’s basing its behaviors on the laws of physics. No messy human language, no opinions, slants, or agendas. AI just isn’t ready (or, possibly, will never be ready) to handle that shit. Plus, it’s not stealing work created by humans under the guise of “training”.
I assume it still relies on datacenters, which are themselves ethically questionable. Still, this seems to be the “flavor” of AI that I hate the least.
