For anyone coming later, I’d actually add a section between where you explain commands for the first time and where you explain their flags or at minimum directly after the flag section. The section should explain how commands are found, how the PATH works and where the majority of binaries on a Linux system are located. Knowing that will allow a reader to immediately understand how simple a shell is and how people are always able to write their own scripts for stuff.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What programming language would you recommend for teaching to non-technical people that use a variety of different OSes?
1·4 days agoYou should read the Python documentation for how many ways there are to set it up. It’s not easy. It might be easy for a pro, but for a beginner it will be a nightmare. Python’s own documentation is thousands of words long for how to get it running correctly, it’s the exact opposite of what you want for beginners. And no it’s most definitely not the most human readable. They call it Ruby Prose for a reason.
I’m not here to have a flame war over Python vs other stuff, but I’ve used both professionally for over a decade. Python is good at stuff, but being human readable by beginners and having good tooling are not even in its ballpark. It has syntax unlike any other modern language and its tooling is shite. https://chriswarrick.com/blog/2023/01/15/how-to-improve-python-packaging/

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What programming language would you recommend for teaching to non-technical people that use a variety of different OSes?
1·4 days agoJava is much easier to set up than Python is. For one Java works with mise, asdf, sdkman and numerous other automatic tool managers. Python on the other hand works with none of those. I wouldn’t recommend either for being easy to set up. Ruby is much easier than both (including my favorite language, Kotlin) and has just as many nice features and is much easier to read than Python.

2·5 days agoIf only it were that easy. Like i said, my job for years was literally deploying scripts and software to a fleet of machines including Macs and windows laptops. Every single install would have something go wrong, every single time.

2·5 days agoAbsolutely do not use Python. It’s a nightmare to install on random computers and the majority of your time spent will be trying to get it working on everyone’s computer (that was my job at one point). As far as I remember, there isn’t a “good” C compiler that comes on windows and the one on Mac is missing some stuff.
I’d go with Ruby, it’s dead simple to install on every OS, easy to teach and learn, and doesn’t work differently across OSes. There’s an installer for it for windows and it comes installed by default on Mac (or it did? Maybe they stopped that).

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•People that have face/butt labeled towels must do a terrible job washing their butts
2·7 days agoDude. I have zero problem with germs. I think we need to be washing our hands less. It’s causing us (verified with many, many studies) to have more allergies and be more prone to sickness.
I do have a problem with morons saying that buttholes are the cleanest part of your body and then suggesting to eat ass. It’s so scientifically inaccurate as to be insulting. You’re so far off on understanding my position (which I’ve stated numerous times now) I can only assume you are trying to misrepresent my position to make me look like an idiot.
You can fuck right off, thank you for nothing.

3·7 days agoNo clue what the last of us looks like but you’re literally making my point for me. No part of your body is clean, arguing a fucking butthole is clean is absolutely insane and is in no way scientifically accurate. Yes, there is bacteria everywhere. There are poop particles everywhere. Ergo, there is poop everywhere. How the hell is poop getting everywhere if your fucking BUTTHOLE IS CLEAN???

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•People that have face/butt labeled towels must do a terrible job washing their butts
2·7 days agoI didn’t say they were dangerously or infectious, where the hell did you read that? I said there’s clearly stuff coming out of your butthole all the time, it’s not a clean location, no matter how much you clean it. Acting like putting some soap on it means it’s clean in an hour is completely disingenuous and scientifically inaccurate. And the example I gave was of one single thing coming out. If one thing is coming out then more is as well.

4·7 days agoThey are particles that came out of your ass. It’s not like you just magically smell fart when someone rips without something traveling from their butthole to your nose.
Edit: How in the world am I being downvoted for something that is unequivocally true. Mercaptans are particles. They come out of your ass.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Ok, honestly, is cast-iron really any better than a non-stick, stainless, copper (anything else?) pan?
9·7 days agoThe best argument against Teflon has absolutely nothing to do with cooking with it and everything to do with how it’s manufactured. The chemicals used for manufacturing are incredibly bad for every part of the environment, have been proven over and over to cause cancer and are impossible to contain. Of course there are good arguments against using it for pans as well, but nobody ever listens to those, I’ve tried.
